The volatility of the FT-SE 100 index in March 2000, now that it includes many high technology companies, was demonstrated this month when it fell 153.6 points in one day to 6445.2. Vodafone and BT accounted for one third of this fall.
The cause of the fall was attributed to fears of possible interest rate rises, but shows how vulnerable these new high-tech stocks are to economic factors.
